Healing Bowl
Singing bowls originated in the Himalayas dating back to pre-Buddhist Bon Po culture. Legend has it that the original bowls were made of iron from meteorites found in the Himalayan mountains. Some sources also say that the bowls were wrought of seven metals, corresponding to the seven planets. They believed the sound vibrations from the bowls came from the heavens and imprinted by the heart, therefore it is a sacred object and a medium.
Today the bowls are used in temples and homes, and have become well known by the wellness culture for their sound and vibrational qualities. Research has shown that healing bowls tone and balances the body’s energy field. We have up to 60% water in our bodies. The sound vibration from the bowl is transmitted through the skeletal system to the entire body’s water which results in relaxation to the cellular level.
For these reasons, demand for singing bowls has increased over the decades in the east and the west. There are more bowls made now selling online, abroad, and in stores. However, the majority are machine-made.
Each bowl has its own consistent frequency. One can tell the quality of the bowl by the length in which the sound and vibration can be sustained. With handcrafted bowls, the vibration can be sustained for up to 5 minutes.
There are a handful of singing bowl metalsmiths in Nepal who still craft by hand. Under the Om symbol above the hand-built furnace, each bowl is birthed with strength, patience, and utmost care. It all begins with hot metal poured into a small disk shape. It is then heated, beaten, and cooled into a bowl shape repeatedly, under maximum tension, without cracking. A single bowl can take up to three days to complete.
Each bowl is a work of art. As every metal manifests its individual sound and harmonics, each bowl offers its own exceptional medicine of sound for healing.
